Simple Web Design Mistakes You Can't Make
12/3/2008 by friendl

I know, everyone makes mistakes and by tripping around the Internet you're face-to-face with hundreds of them every day. When you decided to create your own website, though, I am certain that the thought, "This site will be great" went through your mind several times during its creation.

Websites are like one enormous advertisement. You might not be "selling" a single thing - but that doesn't mean you're not advertising. You have some really great information, or your products are beyond fantastic - if you can't advertise this fact in your web design and layout, though, you won't have any visitors to make the site worth your time.

Nearly half of all your potential visitors and customers are lost when you have a poor web design; if you can't capture your visitors' attention within about 60 seconds of hitting your page, they will hit the back button and move on to another website. Within those first 60 seconds, a visitor will judge your site's content based on how it looks - they are hoping to see professional quality and seek visual clues that tell them what they've found is appropriate to what they're looking for.

Yahoo News Redesign May Pull a Technorati, Why Not Twitter?
9/14/2008 by friendl

Yahoo may not have announced a redesign, but some bloggers have uncovered URLs for a new Yahoo News layout which includes a “Most Blogged” section.

The list is presumably based off its recently acquired Techmeme-like service, Buzz Tracker, which displays related blog posts and those that link back to an article, but the idea seems a bit outdated.

The Washington Post had a deal wih Technorati back in 2005, and it now uses a widget by AOL's Sphere that boasts clients like The Wall Street Journal, Time, Reuters, and CNN.com.

Yahoo's attempt differs slightly in that the blog links are a subset of related stories, and do not appear directly alongside the content.

A "Twittered About" section would make a story more dynamic and timelier than a list of blogs, although a 140 max on text limits the amount of spin.

Regardless, Yahoo benefits by more attention to Buzz Tracker, and the exposure this could provide to bloggers, as Yahoo is still the number one online news site, should make them happy.

As blogger Amit Agarwal points out, to view the redesign, just change the 's' in the url of a news article to 'story'. While is lasts, anyway.

BILL GATES DOESN'T EVEN LIKE HIS MOTHER!
8/15/2008 by friendl

These days, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is known as the most charitable person in the entire world, giving away billions of dollars through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. But for years, Gates was known first for his money and second for a mean streak that flared particularly with women, starting with his mom. In an article bidding farewell to the now-retired top executive at Microsoft, Wired ran down the highlights:

  • 1967: Gates, a difficult sixth grader, asks his mother, "Have you ever tried thinking?"
  • 1977: On several occasions, Gates's secretary enters the Microsoft building to find him crumpled on the floor, asleep. He continues to live on pizza and is a demanding boss, often fighting with colleagues. Among his favorite responses: "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."
  • 1985: Gates reportedly abuses a female executive so badly that she asks to be transferred.
  • May 13, 1990: Gates schedules a retreat for Microsoft company executives — on Mother's Day.

NEWS FROM BRAINSTORM TECH ABOUT WHAT IS COMING TO MY SPACE
7/28/2008 by friendl

Social networking site MySpace will launch a new music service in September,  CEO Chris DeWolfe announced at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference on Wednesday.

The new offering will enable MySpace members to listen to free streaming music as well as purchase song downloads,  ringtones, T-shirts and concert tickets, DeWolfe told an audience of tech executives during an interview with Fortune senior writer Adam Lashinsky.

MySpace - which was acquired by News Corp. (NWS) in 2005 - became a platform for bands to connect with their fans early on, and the company says that 65% of their members currently embed music on their profile pages. But rival social networking site Facebook has begun to overshadow MySpace. According to new numbers from metrics firm comScore, while MySpace still has more users, Facebook is growing at a faster rate. MySpace is hoping the new music service will boost growth.

“MySpace is more about self expression and individuality,” DeWolfe said when asked for his thoughts on Palo Alto-based Facebook. “One of the reasons why we’re investing so heavily in music is that self-expression and music go together so well.”

But MySpace isn’t the only company trying to find new ways to make money off the digital music industry, dominated by Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes.

Robert Kotick, chief executive of game publisher Activision Blizzard, said his company’s popular Guitar Hero game (which lets users play along to their favorite music by pressing colored buttons on a guitar-shaped controller) will soon start selling songs tracks via an iTunes-like music store.

“People are already coming to us for music,” said Kotick, whose Guitar Hero series has reportedly surpassed $1 billion in sales to date. Kotick said that he’s got four or five teams already working on the upcoming music store, but he also added that there are still kinks to work out when it comes to copyright-protection issues.

MICROSOFT THINKING GREEN?????
7/16/2008 by friendl

According to C/Net News!!!

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said more efficient use of IT is one of his company's main priorities for the future--despite the fact that the software giant has been criticized by some for producing processor-hungry software.

Speaking Monday at the CeBit technology show in Hannover, the Microsoft chief described how the software maker is collaborating with German nuclear power provider Yello Strom. Yello Strom's managing director, Martin Vesper, demonstrated a "Yello-saving counter"--a Vista widget that lets consumers monitor their home power via a PC.

Ballmer explained that PCs and other technology still consume far too much electricity. "The lowering of energy consumption is as important for us as new uses of software and IT for the environment," Ballmer said.

Microsoft cited a study by the U.K.'s PC Pro Labs, which found that for a company with 200 PCs, running Windows Vista on the machines produced 45 tons less of carbon per year than running XP. As far as Microsoft is concerned, Windows Vista is the most efficient operating system the company has delivered.

However, a recent survey by U.S. IT services company Softchoice claimed Vista is the most power-hungry Windows desktop so far. The report said that at Windows XP's launch, for example, the minimum CPU requirements were 75 percent greater than those for the operating system it replaced, Windows 2000. Vista's minimum CPU requirements are 243 percent larger than that of XP.

The Softchoice survey also showed that of 113,000 desktops checked from more than 400 U.S. organizations, 50 percent of the machines wouldn't be able to meet the basic Vista requirements. The U.K.'s Green Party has also criticized Vista for requiring "more expensive and energy-hungry hardware, passing the cost on to consumers and the environment."

ALL WEBSITES ARE NOT ALIKE!
7/14/2008 by friendl

Companies do not realize that there are different types of websites out there. Many firms use “template-style” designs which they deliver to you as a branded site. These types of websites look the same as thousands of other sites on the Internet. There are some firms that outsource your project to an independent contractor. The problem with this type of firm is that you are not dealing with the same team that already knows your brand. When dealing with your business-brand and millions are at stake, there is no time for acting like amateurs or pinching pennies. Make sure the goal of a development company is to help make money!

A website is a primarily a marketing and sales tool for your company. For a site to meet the “Rule of Seven” criteria, it is essential that your solution is created by a team of experts in marketing, branding, programming, and design.

When "shopping" for a development company, always pick the one that fits your needs and will be around to follow through!

MORE ON RSS FEEDS
7/11/2008 by friendl

RSS Technology

RSS is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines, and podcasts. An RSS document (which is called a "feed" or "web feed" or "channel") contains either a summary of content from an associated website or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with websites in an automated manner that can be piped into special programs or filtered displays.

Basically there are two types of RSS readers: 1)Web based, such as the Google Reader. 2)Program based. There are lots of RSS reader programs you can download to run directly on your computer. In either case these RSS readers give you a handy interface to simultaneously monitor your favorite feeds from multiple sites and sources. Just follow the directions for each reader.

RSS drives targeted traffic to your website. This lets you have information imported, stored and managed in your browser or reader. If you have industry specific content that is constantly being updated and merged by an unlimited amount of interested parties, you are constantly boosting your search engine rankings on Google, Yahoo and MSN. Put the important content right in front of your prospects.

ALMOST ALL OF OUR CLIENTS ARE INTERESTED IN BLOGGING.....
7/11/2008 by friendl

Almost all of our clients that we talk to are interested in learning more about blogging and  yet the fear of not knowing what to say was holding them back.

Here is a secret about blogging; most of us have absolutely no idea what we are doing when we start.  Seriously.  And here's another secret; there is always something new to learn.  That is the beauty of blogging and social media, we create by sharing.  We find our voice by communicating with others.   It's not about figuring out what you can say, it's about communicating with others.  When you start sharing and connecting with other people, you will find that your blogging voice was always there, but now you'll have the confidence to share it with the world.

And don't worry if someone disagrees with what you might say, that WILL happen.  And when it does, it will likely lead to some excellent discussions!  If everyone likes you, then you don't know enough people.

So if you are in this place, you are curious about social media, but have no idea how to participate, then start by observing.  Start reading blogs that cover your industry.  Leave comments as you find posts that interest you.  I stressed this point during my Blogging for Business presentation, that you do NOT have to blog, but you MUST monitor the blogosphere.  Know what is being said about you and your industry.

Start small, take baby steps, be curious.  But if nothing else, don't let the fear make the decision for you.  The true beauty of blogging is that it gives everyone the chance to have a voice, and it would be a shame if you let fear rob us of the chance to hear yours.

TECHNOLOGY BLOGS
7/11/2008 by friendl

There are thousands of technology Web sites out there, but Weblogs are your e-ticket to becoming an industry insider. Want to find that impossibly thin cell phone or high-resolution digital camera? Or perhaps you need to get briefed on the digital privacy and copyright debates or learn how to fortify your inbox against spam? Bloggers are talking about it. In fact, the posts on veteran blog Slashdot often break technology news. Earlier this year, the site was first to flag America Online's controversial privacy clause for its AIM service that read, in part, "You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the content or to be compensated for any such uses." Besides breaking news, you'll find information on tech trends you can't pick up elsewhere and well-articulated arguments about all things tech. These sites all share limitless curiosity and passion for covering all that is next
